What is 田字格 paper?
田字格 (tián zì gé, "field-character grid") is the squared practice paper every student in China uses to learn handwriting. Each box is divided by a faint cross into four quadrants — like the character 田 ("field") — which helps you place each stroke, judge proportions, and keep the character centred and balanced. This generator builds clean 田字格 worksheets for any characters, free, ready to print.
How to practise effectively
- Trace first. Begin on the faded characters to get the shape and stroke order into your hand, then write freehand in the empty boxes.
- Mind the quadrants. Use the cross lines to balance the left/right and top/bottom parts of each character.
- Follow stroke order. Write top-to-bottom and left-to-right, horizontals before verticals, outside before inside. (Our stroke order tool animates it for any character.)
- Say it as you write. Read the pinyin aloud each rep to link sound, meaning and shape.
